Alternative Spring Break
FOJ was contacted by Kaye, the Assistant Director of Student Activities at
University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, looking for help finding projects for a
group of students she would be taking to Negril for “Alternative Spring Break.”
The idea was for a group of 22 students to spend a week doing repairs,
painting, working with children and so forth. FOJ provided funding for paint
and other supplies for the work the students did.
Below, is a portion of the letter and pictures FOJ received after the students
returned.
“Dear Marcia,
Well, we made it home safe and sound. First – I will give you a run down on what
the week looked like.
Monday it was off to the Ketto Basic School to paint and Tuesday back to Ketto
to finish the job. What an amazing project!!! Tuesday evening we did an Adult
Literacy project that was held out at the Camp Savannah Basic School. Again –
amazing!! On Wednesday the group traveled to Seaford Town to visit the
Vocational technical Institute there and make connections with students. On
Thursday, off to Sav to paint the Pediatric Ward of the hospital. WOW!! This
project was amazing! Thursday evening we were back at Camp Savannah doing
another night of Adult Literacy and finally on Friday off to the Royal Palm
Reserve where we sealed all the decks and the entire 1/2 mile of the boardwalk.
We left early Saturday morning for home – exhausted but so fulfilled and
feeling like we helped lots of people. We are so interested in repeating this
program again next year and really want to continue a dialogue with FOJ to
develop a partnership. Again – thanks. The experience was so cool and the
students just had the most amazing trip.
Kaye"

Together we can make a difference with either a donation or direct help through
personal involvement.
