The Neonatal Resuscitation Program
(NRP) is an ongoing project that teaches doctors, nurses and midwives
throughout Jamaica how to resuscitate newborns. The Program began in November
of 2005 in cooperation with the Jamaica Ministry of Health as part of an
initiative to reduce infant mortality in Jamaica. The project uses the
Neonatal Resuscitation Program developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics
and American Heart Association. It is an internationally renowned
educational program with more than 26,000 active instructors and over 2 million
health providers in the US alone. The course was not being taught in
Jamaica prior to the beginning of this project. NRP is now offered in the
4 regions of Jamaica. Certificates are awarded to Doctors, Nurses, and
Midwives at the end of the all day sessions, after participants pass written
tests and return demonstrations of skills using mannequins and actual medical
equipment
Our Medical Assistance program provides basic medical supplies to the Sav La Mar
Public Hospital (adopted by FOJ). When FOJ's director, Marcia Burke,
first visited the Pediatric Ward at Sav Hospital, she felt like she was
stepping back in time. No modern equipment, in fact, hardly any
equipment, was available. Hospital budget constraints do not allow for
simple items like feeding tubes and resuscitation equipment - things taken for
granted in US hospitals. Many of the supplies we provide are collected at
hospitals in the US and delivered to Sav Hospital. Some items are donated
by companies in the US and by FOJ members.
Success Stories
Friends of Jamaica has supported many other projects when the need has arisen.
Several of these projects were made possible in
part by/color> caring individuals or groups who wanted a more personal
involvement. FOJ helped these individuals
through identification of needs/color>, fund
raising assistance, purchase of project materials, and coordination with local
groups to ensure successful project completion.
