Little London gets another major donation

FOJ supporters Glenn and Teresa McBride continue to focus their efforts on the Little London Project. Please read about their latest exciting trip here, which included a school assembly and was covered by the press.

Katelyn’s Beading Project raises over $1,000 for Mt. Airy All Age School

Katelyn’s project was a big success. She made her first trip ever to Jamaica with her family last week and loved it! She and her 2 younger sisters spent most of their time on the beach and in the water in Negril, but she spent 2 days away from the beach for a good cause.

The first morning was spent at Mt. Airy All Age School where she was guest of honor at a school assembly.

We arrived just as some of the 200+ students from the overcrowded Lower School were marching to the Upper School for the assembly.

It was quite an exciting affair complete with entertainment. Jamaica’s rich heritage is full of myths and mysticism and this program celebrated some of that heritage. One student gave a dramatic presentation of a Jamaican story called the Rolling Calf. The young lady was an excellent actress and storyteller. Several school officials gave short speeches before the presentation of the check. The program continued with a dance number, followed by a heartfelt reading of thanks by another student. It was an impressive program.

These talented girls presented an uplifting dance routine to Ska music, which Vice-Principal Jackson told us is music that originated in Jamaica, and was a precursor to Rocksteady and Reggae.

A big Thank you to Misha Earle, who took most of the pictures. She always makes herself available when FOJ needs pictures and gladly donates her time and talent. Another big thank you to all the Negril and Jamaica message board members that gathered at the Boat Bar April 25th for a party. FOJ had a raffle during the party (Katelyn donated many pieces of jewelry and helped by drawing the winning numbers) and raised an additional $320 for Mt. Airy. Katelyn presented the money to them before she came home, and was again overwhelmed by their gratitude. One last big Thank you to FOJ supporters Dawn Marie and Gary, who donated many prizes to the raffle.

Our work at Mt. Airy isn’t done. After her visit, Katelyn was inspired to go home and continue making jewelry to raise more money. Please visit her web page right now to order some of her lovely creations, or to make a donation.
