July 2007 Newsletter Please enjoy the summer newsletter. It will be a “highlights” only this time – I know there is not a lot of time for reading during the summer. (Unless you’re on the beach with a good book!) The May NRP sessions were very successful with 49 Doctors and Nurse/Midwives being certified in the North East and South East Regions. Two new Jamaican Doctors/Instructors assisted with these sessions held in Annotto Bay and Kingston. We are in the early planning stages of certifying more Jamaican doctors as NRP instructors. This will help make the sessions available to even more people in the future. The next sessions are being planned for early October. Read more about the NRP project here. Two new Instructors in Annotto Bay teaching resuscitation techniques:
After the NRP sessions were over, I went on to Negril for Friends of Jamaica business. In the March newsletter, you read about our current projects for a fence at Happy Hearts Basic School and at Little London High School. At a school assembly at Little London High School, I presented a check for $7000, on behalf of Friends of Jamaica, to Mrs. Elaine Bradley of the Negril Rotary Club for the projects. Most of the money was raised during our online fundraising appeal specifically for these projects. Thank you to everyone who made a donation!! http://friendsofjamaicausa.org/subpages/whatsnew.php The Rotary will oversee the projects and provide additional funding for them. In addition to the check, I was happy to present the school nurse with a donated Glucose Testing Meter. Careful monitoring of blood sugar is not within reach, financially, for many Jamaicans, so the meter will help several teachers monitor their sugar levels in order to stay healthy.
Presentation of the check Presentation of the Glucose Meter Reggae on the Rock II, this year’s FOJ benefit, will be held September 22, 2007 in Rockford, IL. at Cousins Bar and Grill, 510 S. Perryville Road. Cousins is close to many, many hotels in many price ranges. Details are being worked out, but the Band Aswah Greggori from Chicago will be playing Roots Reggae for our enjoyment. Silent auction items are already coming in and promise to be very interesting this year. Raffle and event tickets will again be available online. There will be many more raffle prizes this year. Details will be following soon at the FOJ website. If you have any silent auction, raffle or door prize items you would like to donate, please contact me at director@friendsofjamaicausa.org Please take a moment to cast your vote in the new survey on our home page. Results for the last survey are:
Enjoy your summer, keep the Benefit date on your calendar, and if you can, please make a donation so that we can continue to help the children of Jamaica. Marcia Burke, Director TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
